Rain mode usually cuts power and softens the throttle response for safety. Even with restricted power the bike is already showing 159 on the clock. That tells us the engine has a lot more left in it.
Gear-wise Speed Estimates
These are realistic indicated speeds based on the engine character, typical R-series gearing, and the real 159 kmph Rain mode run we just saw. Figures are for an average Indian rider (65–72 kg). • 1st gear: 45–50 kmph • 2nd gear: 70–75 kmph • 3rd gear: 95–100 kmph • 4th gear: 120–125 kmph • 5th gear: 140–145 kmph • 6th gear: 155–160 kmph in normal conditions In Rain mode the bike has already shown 159. In full Sports / Road mode, with the same rider and conditions, it should comfortably stretch to 165–167 kmph on a long open stretch.
Why 160+ is Easily Possible
Three clear reasons: 1. Power advantage – Almost 8 PS more than the R15 V4 that already used to do 150 kmph. 2. Rain mode restriction – Even with power cut, it showed 159. Full power mode will easily add another 6–8 kmph. 3. Light weight + good aero – 149 kg kerb weight and full fairing help a lot at high speed. With a light rider (under 70 kg), slight downhill or favourable wind, and engine fully warmed up, 160+ kmph is not just possible — it is expected. Many owners will see true 162–165 on a clean highway in Sports mode.
Real-World Expectations
On regular Indian highways with traffic and wind, most riders will see a stable, repeatable 150–155 kmph in top gear. That is already excellent for a 200cc class sports bike. Pushing past 160 will need open road, light load, and the bike in Sports mode. Safety first always — these high-speed runs are best done only on empty highways or tracks. The R2’s real strength is not just the top number. It pulls strongly in the mid-range, stays stable at triple-digit speeds, and feels more refined than most bikes in this segment.

The Yamaha YZF-R2 is not a pure top-speed weapon, but the hardware is clearly better than the claimed figure. Real dashboard proof of 159 kmph in Rain mode already settles the debate. In Sports mode, with a normal rider, expect 160+ easily. With ideal conditions and a light rider, 165–167 kmph is very much on the cards.
